The Wildest, Weirdest, and Most WTF Moments at Disneyland

When Disneyland Had Actual Mermaids

For a brief moment in the 1960s, Disneyland turned into a full-fledged fairytale with real-life mermaids lounging in the lagoon. These performers casually waved at guests, sunbathed on rocks, and probably got a front-row seat to some truly confused kids wondering if they had stumbled into a secret underwater kingdom.

The commitment to realism was impressive—until someone realized that keeping people in tails, floating around all day under the California sun, wasn’t the most practical job. Eventually, the mermaids disappeared, but for a while, this was the closest thing to a live-action Disney movie, minus the singing crabs and villainous sea witches.
