In 2018, KFMB San Diego had an unforgettable moment when a then 10-year-old scarlet ibis named Sophie decided to join the news team. Nichelle Medina was discussing new arrivals at the San Diego Zoo when Sophie perched on her head. Even though she remained impressively composed, her colleague Eric Kahnert wasn’t as brave, hilariously scrambling for safety.
This surprise appearance added unexpected comedy to the broadcast, leaving viewers and staff in stitches. The scarlet ibis is named for its striking red feathers, which contrast sharply against its dark wings. The intensity of its coloration comes from the rich diet of crustaceans it consumes.
