Mary Rand (Born In 1940) – Olympics Long Jump Champion
Mary Denise Rand celebrated victory during the 1964 Summer Olympics as the long jump champion. The win also made her the first British female to take home a gold medal in the track and field category. Decades later, she’s still the only female athlete hailing from Great Britain female to take home three medals from one Olympics event.
Since then, Rand retired in 1968 and has stayed away from the public eye. Wells awarded her the Freedom of the City honors in 2012. She was married to the late English rower Did Rand, and they shared a daughter called Allison. Her second marriage to Bill Toomey resulted in the birth of two daughters, and she is currently married to John Reese.
